Clueless or in cloud cuckoo land?

Postby desperatehousewife on Thu Nov 13, 2008 6:29 pm

it would be great if my daughter had a career idea that looked realisitc, but she wants to be a singer (too much x-factor). I don't want to burst her bubble and self-confidence too much, but she is tone deaf! Please help me to direct her to some realistic career ideas! What can I do to help?

Hi Desperate Housewife,

Firstly, I recommend that she makes an appointment with her Personal Adviser in school. They can look at what options are available to her based on what she enjoys and what she's good at. Secondly, we also have a very interesting podcast in our podcast zone. It's an interview with Pete Waterman and he talks about how hard it is to break into the music industry, particularly if you're not talented in music. From Friday November 21, you can encourage your daughter to watch the podcast on www.sortitonline.com/podcast-zone.

If you want to talk to a Personal Adviser, please email your contact details, along with your daughter's name and school, to ask@cnxnotts.co.uk and we'll arrange this for you.

Yes, this is a big issue out there at the moment isnt it and I'm concerned about my daughter too with all of this.
It's not easy making the point though that it's best to have an alternative plan too, as you just come across as dull and not believing in them, when all you're saying is by all means go for your dream, but if it doesn't happen for all sorts of reasons (mainly that only an incy-wincy few ever make it in the celeb-game and then not for ever), be good if you've been working towards something else that you'll also enjoy that'll bring in the dosh when you're out on your own and want to have money to travel, socialise, buy stuff and live life to the full.

A friend of mine did say that her son who was only goinmg to be a footballer was now convinced that it might be an idea to also think about an apprienticeship after talking to someone at Connexions and so perhaps that's a good idea to get her to see an adviser on the basis of 'exploring how she'll realise her dream' (help her understand what she's got to do to achieve her stardom, not just a walk in the park) whilst they'll no doubt also put the flip side and back-up plan view too?

Ha yep always at this time of year my usually sensible daughter starts to dream of TV stardom thanks to Mr. Cowell! Still I think in reality most teenagers know that only a few can actually follow that dream and set their sights on more realistic goals which complement their skills.
