Addressing delegates at the annual conference of the institute of Career
Guidance in November, Skills Minister John Hayes, MP, set out the Coalition’s plans
for the launch of an all age guidance service from as early as
September 2011.
We’re sure that the devil will be in the detail, but John Hayes, says
the Government’s new service will offer: ”seamless support to young
people as they make the transition to adulthood.”
The new service is planned to combine the best points and practices of the Connexions and Next Step services.
Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Futures already offers both Connexions
and Next Step services from its centres throughout the City and County.
The new service will be founded on two key principles:
- Impartial careers advice independent of organisations with a vested interest.
- Ensuring professional expertise and leadership of careers guidance service are underpinned by clear national standards.
Time will tell how this new service will look but we’re certainly
pleased that the Skills Minister recognises the importance of careers
guidance, stating: “Careers Guidance is the engine room of social
mobility and justice”.
