Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships will give your son or daughter the opportunity to earn while they learn!
Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money at the same time. Apprenticeships are available in many different occupational areas including business administration, retail, engineering, construction, hairdressing, hospitality and catering, health and social care and many more! Demand for places can be high so your teenager will need to apply as soon as possible.
There are two levels of Apprenticeships that may be available. They are:
Apprenticeships
-
Apprenticeships are equivalent to 5 GCSES (grade A-C)
-
Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2, Functional Skills and, in some cases, a technical qualification such as a BTEC or City and Guilds.
-
Apprentices will gain the practical skills they need for their chosen career and may be able to progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship.
Advanced Apprenticeships
-
Equivalent to two A-level passes.
-
If you want to start an advanced apprenticeship you will preferably need to have five good GCSE passes. Most people will do an Apprenticeship as part of an Advanced Apprenticeship, even if they have have A’levels, because they will learn vocational skills.
-
Advanced apprentices gain practical skills and also work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 3, Functional Skills and, a technical certificate such as a BTEC or City and Guilds.
-
Both apprenticeships work towards NVQs and Functional Skills qualifications. In most cases your son or daughter will also get a BTEC or City & Guilds.
Your teenager may then go on to study for a Higher Apprenticeship and can work towards an NVQ Level 4 or in some cases a Foundation degree or part time honours degree.
